Inspirational story of Amutha

Amutha’s SHG Story

Prior to becoming a member of a Self Help Group (SHG), Amutha’s daily life involved reading books, watching TV, washing, cleaning and cooking. She did not leave the four walls of her house and was unhappy as a housewife and knew no other life. At this time, Amutha had no friends, felt lonely and not respected within her community.

One day at the market, Amutha met a SHG group leader who discussed the details of her organization and invited her to a meeting. Amutha attended reluctantly, explaining that her husband was not supportive of her decision to join the SHG. Now, after one and a half year’s membership, Amutha and her husband have accepted and practiced the teachings of the SHG and work together in problem resolution and decision making. Amutha has developed skills in saving, banking and business. Her SHG sells goods to local hospitals, shops, students and families, yielding a profit for Amutha and the other members. These profits are shared communally among the SHG and aid the group’s growth and progress.

Currently, Amutha has been elected to the position of federation leader, a significant role within her SHG. Amutha now feels proud to be a woman while gainging friendships, respect and independence within her community.
