May 1st 2005 –
I was just 22, and I decided to look
out for a job.
I went to a petty shop and got the
Thina Thanthi daily newspaper. At
the time I was eagerly looking for
a job and caught sight of an advertisement
that said “A vacancy exists
for the post of a ‘Secretary’.
The salary would be Rs.7,000/- and
the qualification required was Higher
Secondary or a Graduate.” Only
the name of a person and his mobile
number were given as contact details
in the advertisement. Suspecting that
this was a trap to catch young girls
and force them to prostitution I proceeded
to the place and gave details to the
police.
After through investigation, the
police understood that it was a regular
feature for the advertiser to abuse
women under the pretext of a job offer.
The Assistant Commissioner of the
Anti-Vice Squad constructed a unique
plan to catch the man. One of MCCSS
staff was asked to act as a job seeker.
The MCCSS staff contacted the trafficker
for employment and was asked to come
for an interview at a particular spot.
A team consisting of undercover inspectors
and constables escorted the MCCSS
staff member. During the interview,
she was promised that her salary would
be more than Rs. 20,000/- per month
if she perfectly cooperated with them.
At this time, the police barged into
the room and questioned the trafficker.
Here is our staff member’s narration:
The Police searched the entire house
and confiscated blue film cassettes,
CDs, pornographic pictures and a diary
containing the details of various
girls. The trafficker was then arrested
under the Goonda’s Act. This
mission ended successfully with the
break in the trafficking chain.
